Hey guys, ever wondered where the whole cliché “men treat women like objects” came from? Well, you can look at the “funny” images posted on a daily basis, like this one:
I don’t know exactly who decided to make this, and I don’t particularly want to, to be honest. It popped up on my newsfeed only minutes earlier, from this entirely misogynistic human that lives on the floor above me. The scarier thing is that everyone thinks this is funny. There are three likes on it already.
Some of you may say a “like” isn’t a big deal, that this is just a funny image and does no harm, but by accepting this as the norm here is what you’re actually saying:
“Yes! I condone women being solely treated and regarded as a commodity! Sit on them! Lay on them! Buy them and put them in your living room but make sure they don’t get too dirty! Sign me up!”
We live in a patriarchal society where this is the norm that’s perpetuated, and it’s extremely dangerous. By perpetuating the idea that a woman is simply a commodity is the stuff that makes rape culture so prevalent in our society.
So, I hate to be punny at a time like this, but I just won’t take this sitting down, and neither should you.
Yeah this is awful, but taken out of context. In the commercial that the screen shot is from, the very next scene shows the lady-couch turning into a naked man-couch. The idea here is “pick whichever you prefer.” It’s not the worst of commercials considering what else is out there. Look it up.
